I recently finished listening to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
What I’m struck by is the timelessness of the novel. The surrender of love and truth and art for the sake of ‘happiness’. Exactly how we’ve surrendered our freedom for ‘security’.
Government’s removal of the individual’s need to grow up and move beyond the instant gratification of youth. Don’t think about the state of the world and your circumstances in it, take Soma instead. Or hop on the Internet and pin a few neat things to your board. Ignore the courts and the lobbyists and the corporate ‘persons’ with religion.
Pair this with the article I just read about Generation x having to ‘settle’ for less. Having to readjust their hopes for the future because of The Great Recession. We’ve been convinced that we need to have a lot of money to be happy.
I’ll take art, and contemplative thought, and old books, and the truth. I’ll gladly mix my happiness with melancholy, grief, angst, concern, and worry, with hints of elation and hilarity.
